Get the most out of a practice, always have the players work on
skills besides what's being focused on |
1) During practice you can't teach them to play soccer. You can
teach them one aspect of soccer: focus maniacally on that one topic.
Examples of topics are: 1v1 attacking (1st attacker), 1v1 defending
(1st defender), short passing and receiving, passing and receiving
flighted balls, supporting when attacking (2nd attacker), and supporting
when defending (2nd defender). |
2) Be positive and encouraging. For every negative comment to a player,
you must have already made 7 positive comments: that's the impact of
a negative comment to a player. |
3) Practices are generally organised in a progressive manner of
1) a warm-up, 2) indivual activities, 3) small group activities,
4) large group activities (doesn't have to be 8v8 or 11v11),
5) cool-down |
4) In 1v1 and 2v2 drills, to start always have the defenders pass (serve)
the ball to the attackers. This way, they are working on both passing and
receiving. |
5) When working on attacking, defenders should also be working on good
defending and visa versa. Do not accept bad technique at any time. |
6) Have a goal to shoot at in as many drills as possible. |
7) Use small goals a lot. |
8) Use small-sided games as one part of your practice as much as possible. |
9) No lines, no laps, no lectures. A line with more than 3 players in it is a
line. |
10) To eliminate lines, have multiple copies of the same drill |
